How to upload HEIC photos to Instagram from iPhone or computer

Art'st Studio · Updated: · Türkçe oku

If you've tried to upload a product photo taken on an iPhone to Instagram or a posting tool from your computer and got an "unsupported file" warning, the file is most likely HEIC. HEIC is Apple's space-saving photo format, and it doesn't open everywhere.

This guide explains what HEIC is, how to convert it to JPEG on your phone and computer, and how to set your iPhone to shoot in a compatible format from the start.

What is HEIC and why does it cause problems?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones. It takes up roughly half the space of a JPEG of the same quality. That's great for your phone's storage, but Windows PCs, some browsers and many websites can't read it directly.

Instagram's phone app converts HEIC photos internally, so posting straight from an iPhone usually works. The trouble starts when you move the photo to a computer and upload it through a browser, or when you use a posting tool. Instagram's official publishing interface only accepts JPEG.

Method 1: set your iPhone to shoot in a compatible format

If you want future photos to be JPEG from the start:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to "Camera".
  3. Tap "Formats".
  4. Select "Most Compatible".

From then on the camera shoots JPEG. Files take a little more space but open everywhere. Photos you've already taken stay HEIC.

Method 2: convert automatically when transferring to a computer

Your iPhone can convert photos to JPEG when you transfer them by cable:

  1. In Settings, open "Photos".
  2. Scroll to "Transfer to Mac or PC" at the bottom.
  3. Choose "Automatic".

With this on, photos transferred by cable are converted to a compatible format. Files moved through cloud services may still stay HEIC.

Method 3: convert a single photo on the phone

To quickly convert one photo, use the Files app on your iPhone:

  1. In Photos, select the image and use "Save to Files" from the share menu.
  2. In the Files app, long-press the file and choose "Convert Image" under "Quick Actions".
  3. Pick JPEG as the format and "Original" as the size.

This option exists on iOS 16 and later. On older versions, the browser method below is more practical.

Method 4: convert in the browser, with no upload

If you already have HEIC files on your computer, the easiest route is a tool that converts in your browser without sending the file to a server. Our free Instagram resizer opens HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, PNG, WebP and AVIF files in your browser, brings them to an Instagram size and lets you download a high-quality JPEG. Your photo never leaves your computer.

Steps:

  1. Open the resizer and drag in or select your HEIC file.
  2. The tool suggests portrait, square, landscape or story based on the photo's ratio. Change it if you like.
  3. Check in the preview that the product is centred.
  4. Press "Download JPEG" and upload the file to Instagram.

Which method should you use?

  • If you never want to deal with it again: Method 1, set the camera to "Most Compatible".
  • If you move photos to a computer by cable: Method 2 is enough.
  • If you have a handful of HEIC files: Method 3 or 4.
  • If you also need to fit many product photos to Instagram sizes: Method 4, because it converts and crops in one go.

Opening HEIC files on Windows

Windows 10 and 11 need the "HEIF Image Extensions" add-on from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files. After installing it, open the file in the Photos app and use "Save as" to save a JPEG. This works for single files; for many files the browser tool is faster.

Converting HEIC to JPEG on a Mac

  1. Open the file in Preview.
  2. Choose "Export" from the "File" menu.
  3. Pick JPEG, set quality high and save.

If you select several files and open them together in Preview, you can export them all at once.

Keeping quality while converting

  • Keep quality high: a JPEG quality above 90% preserves product detail.
  • Mind the colour space: iPhone photos are saved in a wide colour space (Display P3). If they aren't converted to sRGB, colours may look dull on Instagram. A good converter does this for you.
  • Check orientation: some tools ignore the photo's rotation flag and the image comes out sideways. Check the preview.
  • Don't overdo the size: Instagram shows images 1080 px wide. Uploading a 4000 px file doesn't improve quality; resizing correctly gives better results. See Instagram post sizes.

How Vitrin handles HEIC photos

When you create a post in Vitrin you can upload HEIC, TIFF, PNG or other formats. The conversion happens on your phone or computer, and an Instagram-ready JPEG is published. You skip the file-format hassle and go straight to the caption and posting step.

Frequently asked questions

Is HEIC better quality than JPEG?

At the same file size HEIC keeps more detail, but converting the same image to a high-quality JPEG shows no visible difference. Instagram recompresses every upload anyway.

Is HEIC a problem when posting straight from my iPhone?

Usually not. Instagram's iPhone app converts HEIC photos itself. Problems mostly appear when uploading from a computer, a browser or a posting tool.

If I switch the camera to Most Compatible, do old photos change?

No. The setting only affects photos you take from now on. Earlier photos stay HEIC and need to be converted separately.

Are my photos uploaded to a server during conversion?

That depends on the tool. Vitrin's Instagram resizer converts in your browser; the file never leaves your computer or phone.

Why do colours look washed out after converting?

iPhone photos are saved in a wide colour space (Display P3). If the converter doesn't convert to sRGB, colours can look dull. Use a converter that outputs sRGB.

Try it in Vitrin

Turn HEIC, TIFF, PNG or WebP into an Instagram-ready JPEG in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
