How to auto-post to Instagram (the official way)

You don't have to be on your phone at the same time every day to keep Instagram active. Auto-posting lets you prepare a post in advance and have it go live on Instagram at the moment you choose. But there is a right way to do it, and a way that puts your account at risk.

This guide explains how to set up auto-posting with the method Instagram officially supports, which account type you need, what can and cannot be auto-posted, and the mistakes people make most often.

What does auto-posting actually mean?

Auto-posting means preparing a post's image, caption and hashtags ahead of time and leaving the publishing moment to a tool. You approve the post, and the tool sends it to Instagram at the time you picked. It goes out even if your phone is off or you are busy with something else.

What matters is how the tool connects to Instagram. Instagram provides an official interface for publishing posts (the Instagram Graph API). Tools that use it never see your password: you grant access on Instagram's own login screen, and you can revoke that access whenever you like.

Apps that ask for your password, promise to "grow followers", or tap through your phone on your behalf break Instagram's rules. They can get your account restricted or even disabled.

Before you start: check your account type

To auto-post the official way, your account must be a professional account. There are two kinds: business and creator. Both are free, and you can switch from a personal account in a few taps.

Switching from personal to professional

  1. Open your profile in the Instagram app and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Go to "Account type and tools".
  3. Tap "Switch to professional account".
  4. Pick a category (for example "Clothing store" or "Arts & crafts") and choose business or creator.
  5. Optionally add contact details and save.

For a more detailed walkthrough, see our guide on setting up an Instagram business account. Switching does not affect your followers or existing posts, and you gain access to Insights.

Step by step: setting up auto-posting

  1. Choose a posting tool that offers the official Instagram connection. Check that the connection screen opens on instagram.com.
  2. Connect your Instagram account inside the tool. Read which permissions Instagram's own screen asks for, then approve.
  3. Upload your image. The official interface only accepts JPEG; a good tool converts HEIC, PNG and other formats for you.
  4. Choose the format: portrait post (4:5), square (1:1), landscape post (1.91:1) or story (9:16).
  5. Write the caption and hashtags, or let the tool draft them, and always read them.
  6. Choose "Post now" or "Schedule". If scheduling, set the date and time.
  7. After it goes live, check it on your profile: are the caption and crop what you expected?

In Vitrin this all happens on one screen: on the create post page you upload the photo, pick an Instagram format or let it choose automatically, then read and approve the text. Posts you put on the calendar go out at the time you set.

What can and can't be auto-posted?

Today the official interface supports:

  • Single-photo feed posts
  • Carousels with several images
  • Reels
  • Stories (on business and creator accounts)

Some things can't be done through the official interface or are limited: adding music, putting stickers or polls on a story, applying filters, or posting from a personal account. Stories published this way carry no caption, so if you want text on a story, place it inside the image beforehand.

Instagram also limits how many posts one account can publish through the official interface in 24 hours. For a small shop that limit rarely matters in practice, and pushing out hundreds of posts in a day isn't a good strategy anyway.

Common auto-posting mistakes

  • Approving without reading: captions written by AI or templates can contain a wrong price, a wrong colour or exaggeration. The final check is always yours.
  • Too many hashtags: since December 2025 Instagram allows at most 5 hashtags per post. Use a few specific ones; our free hashtag generator can suggest candidates.
  • Wrong size: forcing a landscape photo into a portrait post can cut off the product. See Instagram post sizes for the dimensions.
  • Always the same hour: auto-posting doesn't mean picking a random time. Find when your followers are active with the method in best time to post on Instagram.
  • Forgetting the comments: the post goes out on its own, but replying to comments is still your job. Responding in the first hour helps engagement.

An example weekly routine

Say you sell handmade candles and aim for three posts a week. Set aside half an hour on Sunday evening: pick three product photos, prepare a caption for each, and schedule them for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. During the week you only check comments and messages.

Security: how to check and remove the connection

In the Instagram app, the "Website permissions" or "Apps and websites" section in Settings shows which tools are connected to your account. Remove any connection you don't use or don't recognise. You can disconnect Vitrin there or from the connections page in Vitrin at any time.

Never share your password with any tool, and turn on two-factor authentication. A tool that uses the official connection never needs your password.

Frequently asked questions

Is auto-posting to Instagram free?

Instagram's official publishing interface is free. Posting tools may have free and paid plans. Vitrin's free plan includes one Instagram post per week; paid plans allow more frequent posting.

Can I auto-post from a personal account?

Not the official way. Your account must be a business or creator account. Switching is free, takes a few minutes and does not affect your followers or existing posts.

Does auto-posting reduce my reach?

Posts published through the official interface enter the feed the same way as posts from the app. Reach depends on the content, timing and engagement, not on how the post was published.

Will an auto-posting tool ask for my password?

A tool that uses the official connection never asks for your password. You approve access on Instagram's own login screen and can revoke it at any time in Instagram settings.

Can stories be auto-posted too?

Yes, business and creator accounts can publish stories through the official interface. Music, polls and link stickers cannot be added, so place any text inside the image beforehand.

Try it in Vitrin
