Instagram caption length limit and the ideal length

How long can an Instagram caption be? Should it be short or long? Do hashtags count toward the limit? These questions come up a lot when writing product captions. The wrong length leads either to a cut-off caption or to a wall of text nobody reads.
This guide covers the Instagram caption character limit, the part that shows in the feed, hashtag and mention limits, and the ideal length for product posts, with examples.
Quick answer: the limits
- Caption: up to 2,200 characters, including spaces, emojis, hashtags and line breaks.
- Hashtags: up to 5 per post since December 2025. It used to be 30.
- Mentions (@username): up to 20 in a caption.
- Username: up to 30 characters.
- Bio: 150 characters.
Captions over the limit are cut or not published. Most posting tools also trim text at 2,200 characters.
What shows in the feed: the first 125 characters
The whole caption doesn't show in the feed. Roughly the first two lines, about 125 characters, appear under the post; the rest sits behind a "more" link. The exact amount varies with screen width and line breaks.
So put the most important thing in the first sentence. Don't waste that space on an opener like "Hi everyone, today I want to show you...". The first sentence should either spark curiosity or state the product's strongest feature.
Weak and strong first lines
- Weak: "Our new product is on sale, details below."
- Strong: "This mug is dishwasher-safe and its colour won't fade."
- Weak: "Hi, today I want to show you a necklace."
- Strong: "One piece of silver, no clasp: a necklace that slips easily over your head."
The ideal length for product posts
There's no single correct length; it depends on the product and audience. A practical guide:
- Short (150–300 characters): when the product speaks for itself, the image is strong, or you're sharing daily news.
- Medium (300–800 characters): ideal for most product posts. Hook, a few sentences of story, details and a call to action.
- Long (800–2,200 characters): story-driven posts, care guides, the making process. Short paragraphs and blank lines are essential.
Readability matters more than length. A long caption split into short paragraphs gets read; even 500 characters in a single block won't.
Step by step: an effective caption within the limits
- Write the first sentence: the strongest feature or a curiosity hook. Keep it under 125 characters.
- Describe the product in two or three short sentences: material, size, who it's for.
- Add practical details: price, how to order, delivery time. Make sure they're accurate and current.
- Write a soft call to action: "Message us for colour options."
- Leave a blank line and add up to 5 hashtags.
- Check the total length. Preview on your phone and see whether the first two lines make sense on their own.
Hashtags: where and how many?
Hashtags count toward the character limit. Instagram now allows at most 5 hashtags per post, so think about the caption and the first comment together. Three to five hashtags that describe the subject precisely are enough. Use our free hashtag generator to build a candidate list, then keep the most specific ones.
Line breaks and emojis
- Instagram sometimes removes blank lines. Writing in your phone's notes app and pasting, or using a posting tool, usually keeps paragraphs intact.
- Emojis count as characters; some take up two. Use them sparingly and meaningfully.
- Using emojis as bullet points makes a list readable, but three emojis per line is distracting.
Limits differ on other platforms
If you share the same product elsewhere, rethink the length: 280 characters on X, a short conversational caption on TikTok, a more professional tone on LinkedIn. Adapting the caption for each platform works better than copying the Instagram caption as is.
Examples by length
- Short: "Back in stock: the sand-coloured mug. Dishwasher-safe, 350 ml. DM to order."
- Medium: a first line about the glaze, two sentences on how the mug is made, a line with size and price, then a call to action and four hashtags.
- Long: the story of a new collection, split into four short paragraphs with a care tip at the end.
Vitrin checks the limits for you
When you create a post in Vitrin, caption drafts are prepared within each platform's limits: 2,200 characters and at most 5 hashtags for Instagram, 280 characters for X. You can read and edit the text before publishing, and hashtags beyond the limit are removed before anything is sent to Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
Up to 2,200 characters, including spaces, emojis, hashtags and line breaks. Text over the limit is cut or not published.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Since December 2025, up to 5 per post or reel. Keeping caption and first-comment hashtags to 5 combined is the safest approach.
How much of a caption shows in the feed?
About the first two lines, roughly 125 characters; the rest is behind 'more'. Put the most important point in the first sentence.
Are long or short captions better?
It depends on the product. For most product posts 300–800 characters works well. Long captions are fine if broken into short paragraphs; readability beats length.
Do emojis count toward the limit?
Yes, and some emojis count as two characters. Use them sparingly so the caption stays within the limit and easy to read.
